Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (23.08.2013): D word
It astonishes how many negative reactions the mere mentioning of the little word ‘Disco’ still causes, especially among most serious Soul enthusiasts. I’ve never fully understood why this particular genre, whose blurry boundaries blend into Modern Soul and Funk anyhow and got in one way or the other embraced by most artists at the time, triggers such a strong rejection. The most conclusive explanation is, that the strong anti-disco sentiment that developed in the late 70s among punk and rock fans is still effective in these circles without reflection on the musical value of the disputed dance music genre. In the end it’s ironic that the ‘disco sucks’ backlash of the predominately white rock elite against a predominately black dance orientated music, which was threatening the dominance of the former in the charts and on the airwaves, won over so many Soul fans. I’ve always asked myself how much of this aversion is just plain homophobic, but maybe it’s just a misguided urge to ‘keep the faith’ and not to ‘sell out’ that’s behind this sentiment. Looked at it without underground goggles on, Disco is nothing else than a continuation of the dance orientated Soul of the early and mid-70s and is not more or less commercial than the rest of the overall genre. Of course I’m talking here about the quality end of Disco and that’s what exactly featured in the middle part of my last radio show as the following playlist proofs:
