Love Over Gold ‘Fall to Rise’
Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week is ‘Fall To Rise’ by Love Over Gold.
Lucie Thorne and Pieta Brown are the international duo that make up Love Over Gold. Lucie hailing from Australia and Pieta from Iowa in the United States. Becoming fast friends during Pieta’s 2010 Australian tour, Lucie was soon supporting the American visitor, with the pair joining each other behind the mic most nights. The wonderfully gentle connection that arose is sonically understood in their debut collaboration Fall to Rise.
The blend of Lucie’s deeper breathy voice and Pieta’s sweet butterfly-soft tone takes on a vivid life of it’s own. Love Over Gold have delicately woven a simple combination of hushed harmonies, acoustic and electric guitar together that never fails to sound lush. The inside of the album sleeve is a photo taken over the clouds and there is definitely a light and airy space to their sound and still a sense of grounding through the honest and reflective lyrics.
All the songs were written by the duo themselves and they distribute the lead and backing vocals effortlessly. You rarely hear only one voice, which adds to the sense of their harmonising philosophical thoughts. It doesn’t surprise that the album was written around the kitchen table since, as you listen, you feel you are a part of their conversation. You could as easily be on the couch or out in a field on a dusky afternoon listening to them play right in front of you.
Recorded in Pieta’s hometown of Iowa, Fall To Rise traverses the open expanses of both continents to a place where guitar, vocals and poetry meet. It is an inviting album that lets you enjoy the shared desire to choose love over gold.
