Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (25.10.2013): Heading west

BoxEvery year around the first weekend of November it’s time for me to pack a few records in a box and head for the capital city that happen to host the National Northern Soul Weekender this time around. This annual gathering of the Northern Soul faithful that is alternately hosted by the local enthusiasts in Australia’s capitals and has gone through a transition of sorts in the last couple of featuring a broader range Soul music styles. It’s not going to be any different next weekend that will take me to Perth, arguably the main town in this country when it comes to upfront and up-tempo Northern Soul. Naturally this 60s orientated sound is going to dominate the main room, usually populated by a couple of hundred dancers, but it’s the second room where the diversity shines with DJ spinning everything from gritty early R&B to contemporary releases. It’s there where I have the honour to do a set myself, flying the flag of Modern Soul from the 70s and beyond, much like the stuff I played in last weeks Sounds Of Soul radio show as you can see below:
