My Food History – Anna Wong

Anna Wong is an Australian-born Chinese who spent much of her childhood in market gardens and suburban Chinese restaurants in western Sydney. In the early 1980’s , she completed an applied science degree majoring in chemistry but then went to pursue a career in accounting. She learned to swear while working in the music industry, which she says was ‘perfect’ for a career in the food industry.

During this time Anna purchased a farm in Cowra where she plants olives, dates, quinces and persimmons, tending the crops on the weekends. She eventually made the move to live in Cowra and, in 2000, opened her restaurant, Neila, which is influenced by Anna’s Chinese culture and her partner, Jerry’s, Greek heritage. Neila has since gone on to receive international acclaim and has been awarded one Chef Hat by the Sydney Morning Herald for the past 11 years.

To Anna, cooking is a ‘science and an art – following recipes is a ‘science – tasting, the art. The balance of these two key ingredients is kitchen alchemy!’

The My Food History talk series invites some of Australia’s best loved chefs to explore their families’ cookbooks, share recipes passed down through generations, and discuss how their ancestry inspires what and how they cook today.

Dido & Aeneas: Sydney Festival 2014

Renowned for her boundless visual imagination, Berlin choreographer Sasha Waltz has come together with celebrated baroque orchestra Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin to present her first opera: a majestic reimagining of one of the world’s great romantic tragedies, Dido & Aeneas.

Henry Purcell’s 17th century masterwork is the myth of a queen, a soldier and the illicit love that tore them apart. Waltz’s version transports the audience into a wondrous underwater realm, where submerged dancers glide gracefully around a glass aquarium that fills the stage. From these watery depths, Waltz breathes new life into an enduring love story, carrying it to spectacular heights.
