A Taste Of Honey January 16 2014

t bone burnettllewyn davisI am hanging out to see ‘Inside Llewyn Davis the new movie from Joel & Ethan Coen. Its a story based on the life of Dave Van Ronk and his book ‘The Mayor of MacDougal Street’ -powerful singer, fine songwriter and arranger and one of the most quotable figures on the Village scene. For anyone interested in music, this period hilites the rise of folk music in the USA and the resultant impact around the world. This period gave birth to artistes such as Joni Mitchell,Joan Baez,Peter Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan to name BUT a few, who heard the music of Woody Guthrie,Pete Seeger,Tom Paxton,Leadbelly and their colleagues and composed popular folk music coupled with pop arrangements of traditional songs.I have not seen the movie as this show airs on the day it opens in Australia, however the music stands on its own from the soundtrack where the star Oscar Isaac(pic.rt)sings all his songs live, accompanied arranged by T Bone Burnett (pic.lft).Ably supporting them are The Punch Brothers,Mumford & Sons,Justin Timberlake and Carey Mulligan. This is music that proves time and time again the power in song, instrumentation and interpretation by a broad range of very talented people singing from the heart. In addition to a sample of songs from the movie, some tracks from the amazing boxed set ‘Live at Caffe Lena’ together with songs from Tom Rush,Tim Hardin,Buffy Sainte Marie,The Kingston Trio,Odetta and Harry Belafonte round out this weeks show that hopefully will spark a further interest for folk music in your listening choices.
