The Necks…

SOH-Necks-Eventpage-2

Armed with a live reputation akin to Nick Cave and the Dirty Three and riding the crest of the release of their 17th album Open – a slow-burning, simmering opus – ARIA Award-winning artists-in-resonance The Necks bring together the relentless searching of jazz masters Miles Davis and John Coltrane with the innovations of ambient minimalist Brian Eno as they celebrate 27 years as one of Australia’s greatest live bands with a return to the Joan Sutherland Theatre.

Redefining the time-honoured palette of grand piano, double bass and drums to hypnotic effect, the Sydney-born band blur boundaries with improvised performances informed by their decades-long relationship, ever-changing surrounds and an exacting determination to never play the same thing twice. Guiding audiences through sonic vistas of drifting melodies, cascading grooves and wall-of-sound climaxes, The Necks, comprising Chris Abrahams (piano), Lloyd Swanton (bass) and Tony Buck (drums) have garnered an international cult following – critically acclaimed since their ’89 debut Sex, their soundtrack to The Boys (1998) and through to recent masterworks such as Silverwater (2009) and Mindset (2011).

Returning fresh from Europe and with a new home on the Brooklyn-based label Northern Spy Records, The Necks will now take to the Joan Sutherland stage and revisit the territory they’re best known for – vast, sprawling performances simultaneously charged with subtle intimacy, and immersive power.
