Betty Makin Youth Awards Night – Youth Week 2014
A major part of Youth Week is recognizing the positive contributions made by young people and the community that supports them, which is celebrated with the Betty Makin Youth Awards in 3 categories:
• Individual/Group award
• Youth worker award
• Police award.
The awards night includes exciting scholarship announcements, trophy presentations for the award winners recognizing their efforts and young performers entertaining the audience.
You can also download nomination forms for each category below from the City of Sydney Website (scroll to the bottom of the page under “Downloads”) Please take note of the specific nomination information for the individual/group award and the police award categories.
INDIVIDUAL/GROUP AWARD
An individual from each of the following 3 sub-categories will receive a $500 scholarships and 2 groups will each receive a $500 scholarship:
• contribution to the community
• environmental sustainability initiative
• creativity, arts and culture.
The individuals and groups are chosen by a panel as the shining example in their area.
Nominations
When making your nomination, please take the following into consideration:
• contribution towards the development of projects, programs or services for young people in the local area
• an active long-term commitment to 1 or more community services
• long-term involvement in recreational, educational or vocational programs offered in the local area.
YOUTH WORKER AWARD
This award is open to paid workers and volunteers who have demonstrated commitment to:
• the development of projects or services for young people in the local area
• the development of a particular program or service
• an active long-term commitment to 1 or more services for young people in the local area.
POLICE AWARD
This category is limited to commissioned officers within the City of Sydney’s 7 local area commands: City Central, The Rocks, Surry Hills, Kings Cross, Redfern, Newtown and Glebe.
Nominations
When making your nomination, please take into consideration that the police officer:
• contributes to programs and services for young people in the local area
• builds positive relationships between NSW police and young people
• maintains a long-term commitment to 1 or more community services that benefit young people.

Strata Skills 101 – Petiquette
As a pet owner in a high rise apartment building it is important to remember that not everyone will love your pet like you do.
With over 15 year experience Dr Joanne Righetti, PhD Animal Behaviourist, understands the human-animal bond and helps people with their pets. Jo has worked as an Ambassador for Assistance Dogs Australia, Animal Welfare League Australia and Purina Australia. Also holding an Honorary Associate of the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, University of Sydney and an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of New England.
Jo can help you by practical strategies to deal with common issues that arise in apartment buildings as well as the PETiquette for common areas, lifts and evacuations along with an overview of the impact of by-laws.
PETiquette will help you and your pets live in harmony with your neighbours. Regardless of whether you own or rent, you’re invited to attend.

2014 PROGRAM:
Our 2014 program will advise you on how to tackle common issues faced by small businesses and cover industry-specific topics (food trucks, small bars, outdoor dining). There’ll be the chance for Sydney entrepreneurs to get connected to the Sydney ecosystem (tech start-ups seminar on 18 June and 22 September) and advice for creative people looking to evolve their project into a functioning business (creative industry, from art to business on 29 October).

Intergenerational Film Project
Local seniors and young persons of City Spaces West (Glebe, Ultimo & Pyrmont) are proud to present an intergenerational film that highlights the commonalities and differences in the lives of older and younger generations. This film is themed around a Chinese saying that “it is how one dresses, what one eats, how one lives, and how one travels that makes up a person.”
This project seeks to deconstruct intergenerational stereotypes and re-create cross-generational understanding of younger and older people within the community, as part of Seniors Week and Youth Week events in 2014.

Youth Week in the City Sports
You are invited to register for the Youth Week in the City Sports Day.
National Youth Week will take place from Friday 4 April – Sunday 22 April 2014. The initiative acknowledges and celebrates the positive contributions made through young people’s efforts and achievements.
As part of National Youth Week, the City of Sydney holds the Youth Week in the City Sports Day which provides young people aged 12-25 with the opportunity to compete in sporting competitions and develop relationships with other young people, youth services, youth workers and local police.
You will have the chance to:
– Compete in Soccer and Basketball competitions
– Meet and play alongside the Sydney Kings and Sydney FC players
– Have a go at Cross Fit demonstration
– Enjoy a free lunch and DJ workshop

Sydney is Fashion 2014

How to get to this event: Rail: CarriageWorks is an eight-minute walk from the Redfern Station. Redfern Station is easily accessed from
Central, Town Hall, Wynyard and Circular Quay. Most lines travel via Redfern including Northern, North
Shore & Western, South and Inner West.
Macdonaldtown Station is a 10 minute walk; take the Inner West line from Central.
Newtown Station on King Street is a 15-minute walk. Turn right out of the station then right onto Wilson Street.
Take the Inner West line from Wynyard, Central, Circular Quay or St James.
Buses: The closest stop is the Sydney University stop at Codrington Street on City Road/King Street. From
