Sounds Of Soul chronicles and playlist (4.4.2014): Wax climax

PhenomenonAfter all the excitement of the last couple of weeks (interviews with legendary Soul ‘n’ Funk musicians, guest DJs and what have you) it was time for a good old session of Soul on wax and nothing more. So it seemed natural that last week’s radio show featured a broad spectrum of records, everything from Modern Soul and Disco to upfront Northern. That hard to grasp sub-genre of Crossover Soul was represented as well with a record from 1970 I dig very much – the fantastic ” Girl You Turned Your Back On My Love” by Lee Charles on Gene Chandlers Bamboo label. A more recent acquisition served as opener – the underrated “Without Your Love” by the Phenomenons on AVI from 1978. And maybe the climax of last weeks little selection was one of the many classics – Patti Jo’s interpretation of Curtis Mayfield’s masterpiece “Make Me Believe In You” produced by none other than Chicago’s number one musical genius himself. There was much more that deserves to be mentioned here as you can see in the complete playlist below.
