Dr John Yu is a distinguished Australian – a former Chancellor of the University of NSW and Chief Executive of the Children’s Hospital at both Westmead and Camperdown.  Appointed Australian of the Year in 1996 and AC in 1998, he has been awarded many honors and taken many roles in medicine, the arts and community service.

At heart, however, he is a collector.

Over many years, with Dr George Soutter AM, Dr Yu has assembled a remarkable collection of Asian metalwork, ceramics and textiles. A selection of their Indonesian textiles forms the basis of a new exhibition, Encounters with Bali – a Collector’s Journey, opening at Mosman Art Gallery on 3 May, revealing the sophistication, beauty and use of textiles across the Archipelago.

Join me, Maisy Stapleton, as I speak to John Yu about his collections and memories and to Mosman Gallery’s Assistant Director/Senior Curator, Katrina Cashman, about the exhibition and its public programs.
