Armed with a collective spread of over 20 Grammy Awards and legendary collaborations with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, B.B. King and John McLaughlin, pioneering electric jazz pianist Chick Corea and vibraphone maestro Gary Burton continue their unstoppable journey through 40 years of duets – returning to the very stage they recorded The New Crystal Silence for a one-off Opera House performance improvising through their favourite songs and standards, as featured on the award-winning Hot House (2012).
Meeting their match as future-fusion pioneers in the early ’70s, Corea and Burton’s signature stretches through electric epics have evolved with a romantic delicacy considered to be the summit of mainstream and modern jazz alike. Weaving washes of classic Corea piano flourishes with Burton’s prodigious four mallet interplay, the incendiary duo’s towering live reputation crosses from Miles Davis’ mythical lost quintet (Corea) and performances with Stan Getz (Burton) to the classic catalogues of ECM, Verve, Blue Note, and the Downbeat Hall of Fame. Now guiding the likes of Lennon and McCartney, Thelonius Monk and Kurt Weill into a series of vital reinterpretations, Hot House reads through two lives raised on jazz’s most groundbreaking moments, whilst lending a familial hand to guide the genre into newly unbound territory.
