Another amazing talent left us for the ‘big creative house in the sky’-Gerry Goffin passed away on June 19 2014 at the age of 75. I never knew who created some of the major songs that I and my friends were dancing and romancing to in the 60’s but it was creative geniuses such as Gerry Goffin and his then wife Carole King(nee Klein)(pic.left) who gave us 59 US and 21 UK Top 40 hits and other songs that will be familiar to many.
Their songs gave fame to the The Shirelles “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” The Chiffons “One Fine Day”,Bobby Vee “Take Good Care Of My Baby “,The Drifters”Up On The Roof” and ” Some Kind Of Wonderful”, Steve Lawrence”Go Away Little Girl”,Dusty Springfield “Goin’Back”,Aretha Franklin “You Make Me Feel(Like A Natural Woman)”,The Monkees “Pleasant Valley Sunday”, Little Eva and Kylie Minogue “The Loco-motion” and more.
When they grew apart personally and creatively Carole King went onto the heady days of “Tapestry” and beyond and Gerry wrote with,among others Michael Masser. Together they gave Whitney Houston her first No 1# hit,”Saving All My Love For You”, Diana Ross “Do You Know Where I’m Going To” from “Mahogany”, Gladys Knight “So Sad The Song’ amongst many others.
The man who wrote the lyrics to “Who Put The Bomp(In the Bomp,Bomp,Bomp)”with Barry Mann and “Run To Him” with Jack Keller, had his own share of issues with LSD & Mescaline and ill health but is fondly remembered by Carole King who said on his passing:
Mr Goffin “was a good man with a dynamic force,whose words and creative influence will resonate for generations to come-his words expressed what so many people were feeling but didn’t know how to say.”
