Live Music Returns To Maroubra
For many years live music seemed to languish in the doldrums, being the sole domain of DJs who played mash-ups of musicians’ recordings (some even achieving pop-star status themselves) and was predominantly enjoyed by those under the ripe old age of 25. But now, thanks to some local businesses, a local club and a local enterprising former studio musician, good old live music is set to return to Maroubra for those who want the ‘real thing’.
Eric Gyors, a former professional session musician turned business entrepreneur, together with The Maroubra Sports Club have decided to trial the first three, of hopefully many more, live shows bringing soul, blues, jazz and funk to an audience hungry for music that they used to enjoy daily but which has slipped away over the last few decades. ‘Baby-Boomers are alive and kicking, besides which there are an increasing number of younger people who prefer to see some real live musicians on stage’, Mr Gyors said.
With the support of Belle Properties of Randwick, Walsh’s Pharmacy of South Maroubra and the Maroubra office of Aussie home finance, all local businesses, some of the top musicians in Sydney will be performing for an audience that refuses to lie down and die, just because they now have mortgages, kids and other responsibilities.
Fronted by none other than Continental Robert Susz (think Dynamic Hepnotes, Might Reapers) and Matt “The Rumble” Morrison (The Rumbleators) a solid 7 piece group will be ripping into a whole bunch of soul and blues standards which should prove that there is life after 30… or 35… or 40… or even beyond!
Chris Quinane, the manager of the Maroubra Sports Club, said he was “eagerly looking forward to some great music and an appreciative audience”.
The shows are all designed to be early nighters (7:00-10:00pm) because, in the words of Eric Gyors, “people are crying out for some more good live music, but they still need to be able to get up the next day and go to work.” The dates are all Thursday nights, which leaves people free to still have their planned weekend activities. The first show will be Thursday 23rd of October, then 13th of November and finally the 4th of December.
‘If we’re right in thinking that the local people of Maroubra and surrounds want a good venue to catch some of the best music in Sydney then we’ll do more shows next year’ said Mr Gyors. Meanwhile the Maroubra Sports Club on Malabar Road will be the ‘Home of The Blues’ when the “All Stars” bring it all back to what once used to be a nightly occurrence around Sydney.
