Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival at Foundry 616

This November, popular jazz bar Foundry 616 will have the privilege of hosting a number of incredible jazz acts that here in Sydney for the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival.

The past festivals have shown an incredible amount of talent from women in Jazz, and this year will be no different.

Starting on the 5th of November, Foundry 616 will have Dee Alexander, the Hannah James Trio, Jazz Hip Hop Freestyle Jam, Gai Bryant’s Palacio de la Rumba Big Band and The Komeda Project performing some fantastic concerts for the festival, with jazz sounds ranging from smooth jazz to funky hip hop to be featured by the different artists.

Dee Alexander will kick things off with her scintillating vocals that are reminiscent of the jazz greats Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington. She has a three show line up at Foundry 616 beginning on the 5th of November. 

Musical storytelling will be taken to a whole new level with the Hannah James Trio performing their new album Triliphony. The album features live recordings of the trios intricate jazz melodies and “shape shifting” rhythms. The trio consists of Hannah James, an award winning bassist, Casey Golden and Edward Rodrigues. Come and see them on the 6th of November for a night of jazz storytelling and explosive jazz songs from their brand new album.

The Women’s Jazz festival are shaking things up a little with the inclusion of the wild Jazz Hip Hop Freestyle Jam, who are famous for their mixture of jazz and hip hop. With their beginnings being made by the SIWJF, the group are celebrating their one year anniversary with a funky, edgy show that will feature many talented MC’s and singers. They are set to bring the funky side of jazz on the 7th of November.

We are being spoilt with the inclusive of Gai Bryant and her 18 piece band who are bringing the fire with their Cuban and jazz music. Gai is bringing with her Roman Justo Pelladito, whom she met in Cuba and who introduced her to a fresh rumba sound which the two of them are bringing to their show on the 9th of November.

To round out the performances for the SIWJF at Foundry 616, Andrea Keller and Miroslav Bukovsky are presenting some new work based around the famous Polish jazz pianist Kryzstof Komeda. Calling it the Komeda Project, the duo are taking their eastern European heritage and Komeda’s work as inspiration for some incredible jazz songs that they will perform at their show on the 12th of November.

The Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival has so many great acts this year, and Foundary 616 is just one of the top venues that will host shows for the female inspired jazz festival.
