Chatswood Musical Society presents The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe

Children’s theatre often offers entertainment for the child but is a true act of love by the parent.  Thankfully, that isn’t always the case, as the current Chatswood Musical Society production of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe performed at the Zenith Theatre shows. The production is a remarkable display of talent and dedication from an amateur society.  Only on until Saturday the 22nd of November I strongly suggest you find a gap in the schedule of school sports, birthday parties and other extra-curricular activities that fill your child’s life in order to take them along to see this show.

The Pevensie Siblings

As the curtain rises, you’re introduced to an inventive set, perfectly designed to be easily switched around between scenes – no overly long changeovers here.  The first musical number introduces you to the entire cast.  This is where you may begin to have some doubts.  How can such a large cast, including some very young cast members, carry such a long performance? Such doubts are quickly dispelled.

The talent of those performing on stage was remarkable. Whilst the whole ensemble excel, a special mention has to be made of the younger performers.  They weren’t there to fill the stage, or persuade their extended families to come to the show, they can really act. And sing. And dance.  The younger Pevensie siblings, Edmund and Lucy, played by Jude Paddon-Row and Sophia Barnard, show remarkable talent in being able to perform such large roles. The rest of the cast are also delightful, with Mr & Mrs Beaver stealing every scene they’re in.

The show is a little long, coming in at two and a half hours including the interval, but apart from one young Buzz Lightyear I saw nodding off in the front row during some of the second act, you never got a sense that the audience wasn’t with the performers for the entire length of the show. An impressive feat considering there were some very young children present.

If you live in the area, do take your children to see this show.  It’s a wonderful example of the kind of talented individuals involved in community theatre.  Who knows, it might inspire your own children to get up on stage to perform: the whole cast looked like they were having a great time whilst they entertained their delighted audience.
