Cold Intimacy, Strange Country, TOTEM & King O’Malley

Today’s guests: Patrick McCaughey, Neelanthi Vadivel, Melissa Loughnan, and Phil Rouse.

preview_Preview My first guest: Author, Art Critic, and Gallery Director, Patrick McCaughey, discusses his new book Strange Country – Why  Australian Painting Matters’ in which he turns his expert gaze to the gap between international ignorance of Australian art  and the undeniable power and originality of work produced in this country. Patrick demonstrates not only why Australian art matters but why it should matter more beyond our national frontiers and rightfully take its place amongst the visual languages of humankind.

‘Strange Country – Why Australian Painting Matters’

is published by The Miegunyah Press, an imprint of Melbourne University Publishing (MUP).

NeelaMy next guest: Cirque du Soleil’s Artistic Director, Neelanthi Vadivel, chats about her role with TOTEM and her many experiences working on various Cirque productions.

Neelanthi, a dancer by trade, has been with Cirque du Soleil for 8 years.

TOTEM is a fascinating journey into the evolution of humankind – it traces humankind`s incredible journey – from our original amphibian state to our ultimate quest for flight. Along the way, it also explores our dreams and infinite potential, and the ties that bind us both to our collective animal origins and to the species that share the planet with us.

My next guest: Director, Phil Rouse, chats about the landmark play ‘The Legend of King O’Malley’. Originally written in 1970 by Bob Ellis and Michael Boddy, this play celebrates one of Australia’s most colourful politicians, King O’Malley, in a wild romp of epic storytelling and melodrama.

This satirical vaudeville production combines bawdy cultural references of modern day revivals, the presentation of war from 20th century cinema and the international opinions of Australian politics.

This production is a collaboration with Don’t Look Away, a company dedicated to reviving and invigorating classic Australian plays.

The Legend Of King O’Malley:

Wednesday 26th November to 13th December 2014

The Reginald Theatre, Seymour Centre, Chippendale.

I look forward to your company 10.30am – 12.00pm
