A Taste Of Honey January 15 2015
“Drinking Songs” – after sex. love and breakups, no subject has been a bigger muse to musicians than booze. When one considers this thought, it is alcohol that typically leads to these three acts……….. Any occasion is a good occasion for “drinking songs” ….. …apparently, and these songs can cover every situation from being wondrously happy to drowning ones sorrows.
Today’s programme features 22 selected tracks that reflect across a broad spectrum on various types of drinks and an equally broad spectrum of situations. In addition I dedicate this show to my friend Johhny Day – filmmaker, musician, great human being who left us suddenly and far too early.
He would appreciate this music and smile as was his constant demeanour.
With the help of (pictured from left to right) Tom Waits, Rupert Holmes, Flaco Jiminez ,Amos Milburn plus EagleAlannah Myles,The Eagles, J.J.Cale, Eric Burdon and War, The Champs, The Andrews Sisters and many more, the programme is a mere single measure in the vast liquid world of “drinking songs.”
It does feature one of the most played contemporary drinking songs ‘Escape(The Pina Colada Song)’ that I worked on when it was released and nobody realised that on the one hand it was going to be such an enormous success but on the other hand, would be the writer’s (Rupert Holmes) only major hit – one too many Pina Coladas perhaps?
