A Taste of Honey January 29 2015
Last year Ethan and Joel Coen’s critically acclaimed movie ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ created a new interest in folk music of the ’50’s and ’60’s. Artistes such as Gillian Welch and partner Dave Rawlings, Marcus Mumford, The Punch Brothers, Oscar Isaac, Chris Thile and Justin Timberlake all contributed to the soundtrack album. The movie gave rise to a full concert that took place at the New York Town Hall and under the direction of the Coen brothers, ‘Another Day,Another Time-Celebrating the Music of Inside Llewyn Davis’, a performance documentary of the concert was made and aired on US televison. It is expected in Australia sometime this year. Musical genius T Bone Burnett arranged and produced the music and some of it is featured in today’s program. In addition it allows me a perfect segue into some classic and modern folk music featuring Mark Knopfler, Al Stewart, Marianne Faithfull, The Corrs, Lucinda Williams, Sandy Denny and more. I have found that regardless of how one might be feeling, the lilting voices, the Gaelic overtones, the passionate words, the acoustic guitars, the personal emotional performances of folk music in all its forms, conjure up images of events and places maybe known to oneself or maybe not, but leave one dreaming just a little or perhaps a lot of the past, the present and the future.
