Let’s cook some crêpes!

Boeuf bourguignon, tartiflette, foie gras, wine… France is all about gastronomy! But I’m from Brittany, so of course I’ll write especially here about crêpes

Last Monday, it was Chandeleur in France. And I guess you have absolutely no idea what this day is about! Well, it’s just another occasion to eat all together but this time we cook especially crêpes!

I’m sure now you are hungry!

Actually, we don’t really need a special day to cook it, for example my father used to cook it for my sister and me almost every Sunday evening… So Chandeleur is just another occasion, as we love crêpes. It always means sharing, fun and even now I always do « crêpes party » with my friends… You are never too old to enjoy it!

So, this day is mostly a Christian day, the day of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, also called Candlemass which is more or less the English equivalent of Chandeleur in French. So it’s a day celebrating the light, that’s why we cook crêpes. You don’t see the link? Well, crêpes have the form of a disc and are yellow… Like the sun! Yes, French people have a lot of imagination when it’s about cooking. We have also this really interesting tradition to get luck : to make the crêpes jump with a coin in your hand…

Do you want another proof that we love crepes in France? Chandeleur was last weekend, so we missed it, that’s a shame… But don’t worry! Tuesday, 17th March it’s Mardi Gras (literally Fat Tuesday), and we celebrate it in a quite different way from you: with crêpes (again)! Indeed, it’s the last day before Lent, so we used to eat a lot! Now, France is not really religious anymore, but we still love eating so we only keep the best parts of the tradition…

So, you need now a French crêperie… And you are really lucky because I have one to recommend to you: Four Frogs! Owned by four french men (the « Four Frogs »), you can find their restaurants in Mosman but also in the Spot in Randwick. So dont miss the chance to discover, with a glass of cider of course, their amazing French crêpes but also galettes. What’s the difference? Well, I will let you find this out by yourself! Let me give you a last tip: try the traditional sugar and salted butter crêpe!
