A Taste Of Honey March 5 2015

John Phillips 3_7barry mannneil finndylanfleet The process   starts with an idea for a song and some very talented  people take that idea singly or via  collaboration and  commence the  songwriting process. Sometimes the singer/songwriter(s)  record their own works very successfully and in this case their legacy becomes twofold- their performances of their own songs as they imagine them plus other artiste’s recordings and imaginings  of the former’s original works.

In the case of pure composers their legacy becomes somewhat different in as much as their songs live on through the performances of the chosen performers/imagineers of the songs. This weeks programme features both singer/songwriters singing their compositions plus having them reimagined by other interpreters of songs. In addition there are simply composer’s works reimagined and performed by artistes that have not been involved in the songwriting process.

Pictured from left to right are singer/songwriters/performers; John Phillips (The Mamas and The Papas), Barry Mann & Cynthia Weill (53 UK Hits & 98 US Hitssolely or with collaborations), Neil Finn, Bob Dylan and Fleetwood Mac (featuring Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham at the far right of the picture).

Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Adele, Eva Cassidy, Georgie Fame, George Benson, Art Garfunkel, k.d.lang, Frank Sinatra and others add their own personal style to some of the best songs ever written-from 40’s standards to 60’s hits to 21st Century reimaginings.

Whether you are a purist who sticks to your favourite original versions or you are happy to to ‘open your ears and mind’ to a new version of an old favourite – my credo of ‘it’s all about the music’ is clearly evidenced in the 20 tracks included in this programme. There is no doubt in my mind that all listeners will find songs in the playlist that they know and really like PLUS  will find some they may have not thought of for a long time and will reunite with the soundtrack of their life.
