Smiling For Smiddy: cycling challenge for cancer research

Are you wondering where Station Manager Tony Smythe has got to, this week?

He is keeping himself busy riding a bike from Brisbane to Townsville, in aid of defeating cancer.

Smiling For Smiddy is a charity created to raise money for Cancer Research.

Its story starts in 2006, when Adam Smiddy died of an agressive melanoma at the age of 26. He was a talented triathlete and physiotherapist. To honour his memory, his mates decided to raise money riding on their bikes around Australia and also organizing triathlons. They were 3 friends at the beginning, riding from Brisbane to Townsville, they are now 50 bikers and 10 volunteers to ride against Cancer all around Australia.

In their minds, the ride is a kind of metaphor of the fight against cancer, but they know that even if riding 200 km or more in a day is hard, it’s still easier than to fight this disease. They decided to ride all around Australia but as you know, it’s quite a big country, so they decided to divide it in 7 parts and to do one every year. This year the ride is from Brisbane to Townsville.

Their charity is not only about the ride, though. It became a huge fundraising enterprise. Indeed, this adventure is all about support and generosity, from the bikers to each others, from the volunteers to the bikers, and of course from the givers to the charity.
