Australia Council Awards & Short+Sweet Gala on Arts Monday with Dr Margaux Dombkins 16 March 2015

Alysha Herrmann is a 2015 Australia Council Award recipient. Alysha, a writer, theatre maker and cultural producer received The Kirk Robson Award (Community Arts and Cultural Development). Alysha uses performance and civic action to inspire individuals and communities to reclaim and reinterpret their personal stories as art and was recently awarded the 2014 Channel 9 Young Achiever Arts Award.

The Kirk Robson Award recognises outstanding leadership from young people working in community arts and cultural development, particularly in reconciliation and social justice. It was established to honour Kirk Robson who was fatally injured in a car crash in 2005. He received the Council’s Young and Emerging Artists Initiative and was the Artistic Director of The Torch Project.

Speaking Freely by Jack Kelly sees a blind date couple’s subconscious selves add to the conversation.

“Been on the worst date ever? Think again!”

Speaking Freely features actors: Sebastian Angborn; Amanda Collins; Krystle Hill; and Hunter McMahon.

Serhat who has an extensive background in drama, theatre and acting studies, has worked in TV, theatre and film in Australia. His AFI nominated film Cedar Boys, won the Audience Award At the Sydney International Film Festival.

Speaking Freely faced ten weeks of heats and preliminary finals to be chosen as one of the 13 best short plays – from more than 140 performed at two venues since January.

Alyson, a performer, theatre-maker and community artist, received The Kirk Robson Award (Community Arts and Cultural Development).

Alyson has made theatre with remote Indigenous communities, young people, people with disabilities and mental illness, and prisoners and former refugees both in Australia and overseas. Alyson is a Teaching Artist for Sydney Theatre Companyʼs School Drama program and manages Rozelle Neighbourhood Centreʼs accessible arts programs.
