A Taste Of Honey April 16 2015 – Lennon : Through A Glass Onion

IMG_1091 Channelling any icon of the entertainment world is a tall order in anybody’s  terms. To channel not only the  icon in your words but to also adapt the icon’s music is particularly brave. My guests this week,(pictured on my right) are John Waters and (on my left)  Stewart D’Arrietta, who together in 1992 conceived and performed Lennon : Through A Glass Onion on a small stage at the Tilbury Hotel In Sydney.
Over the next 22 years they have toured this show Australia wide several times and in addition seasons in the West End of London. In late 2014, as a result of their talent and hard work coupled with the the belief of Duet’s Harley Medcalf, the show played Off Broadway from October 2014 through to January 2015.
“To be embraced by New Yorkers as we were from October to January, this was a great reward for all of us who worked so hard to get our show there,at the Union Theatre. It truly felt as though Glass Onion had in fact given the city what it needed , to reconcile their own sense of loss of a much loved ‘son’,as John Lennon came to be . Night after night, our audiences stood to acknowledge us,and it doesn’t get much better than that”John Waters.
For five years, I lived close to New York’s own monument to John Lennon – Central Park West’s Strawberry Fields and spent many calming hours listening and watching  fans and admirers playing his and Beatle songs to the onlookers, while leaving candles and assorted personal items at this iconic entertainers shrine.
I feel privileged to be able to have interviewed both John and Stewart and having them share their creative input with me(and you)  and hope you enjoy the programme which takes a small journey from Liverpool to New York with excerpts from the show itself, a few songs from The Beatles and also a BBC interview from John himself regarding his then (in 1962-65) newly found success.
Ninety  minutes is way to little time to profile John Lennon but I hope this insight into his personna, his music and his life brings back positive memories and perhaps encourages you to want to hear more music and to go and experience the show.
