Anzac Day to me is a time for reflection. I have visited Gallipoli and was saddened by the ages of the fallen inscribed on their headstones. I was further moved by the way in which the Turkish people respect the sacrifice made by the ANZACs and the reverence they show to these silent rows of young men from so very far away that invaded their country.

This weeks’s programme is dedicated to those individuals who served in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps 100 years ago at Gallipoli and to all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations around the globe.

I used to accompany my late father ( who served in The New Zealand army) to the Dawn Parade each year at the Auckland War Memorial museum as did many of my friends with their fathers.Later as a school cadet I volunteered for Cenotaph duty each Anzac day in respect of those who served.

The music I have chosen describes conflict and sadness and also is anti war in its sentiment. Songs that are anti war by Buffy Sainte-Marie’s “Universal Soldier” sung by Donovan, John Lennon’s ” Imagine’ sung by Ray Charles,Ruben Stoddard and The Harlem Gospel Choir, Jimmy Little’s “In A Field In France”, Andy Stewart’s “A Scottish Soldier”, Anania Amohau’s “Maori Battalion”sung by Sir Howard Morrison and more.

Songs that describe leaving home for war and unknown futures in far off lands such as “Now Is The Hour” sung by Frank Sinatra and “Blue Smoke ” sung by Neil Finn and Jim Carter  ** and reflective songs that include “Where Have All The Flowers Gone “by The Brothers Four  and ” Blowin’ In The Wind” by Bob Dylan and The Rolling Thunder revue.

And more.
