Jazz made in Australia – Program for Monday 15th of June 2015

Matt McMahon is one of Australia´s leading jazz pianist, composer, improviser, but over his 20+ years as a professional musician he has also enjoyed playing in a diverse range of world musics such as Korean, Arabic and Traditional Irish, and other genres as funk and soul, classical and pop and he says “they have all left their mark on my conception”.

Recently Matt has released a Solo recording of improvisations which he has named “The Voyage of Mary and William” as a reference to his forbears who came from Tiperary in Ireland to Australia in 1847 and the strong strain of Irish culture within his own family. He says that the music is not about the experiences of his forbears. It was not inspired by them or conceived with them in mind, but that they have left their indelible trace on his music.
