Peter Smetana here from FreedomJazzDance, sitting in for PJ who is away for these shows.
I’ll be presenting a show of South African jazz.
It grew in spite of apartheid. Its parents were Mbaqanga (dance music of the townships) and American bebop and swing.
Such names as; African Jazz Pioneers, The Jazz Epistles, Dolly Rathebe, Zacks Nkosi, Spokes Mashinyane, Manhattan Brothers, Miriam Makeba, Winston Mankuku, Dollar Brand, Dudu Pukwana and many, many more.
