Album of the Week – ‘Woman’ by Jill Scott
Woman by Jill Scott is Eastside Radio’s Album of the week.
The American soul queen returns with her fifth studio album presented by Blues Babe and Atlantic Records. This critically acclaimed release is one to add to the album haul taking textbook inspiration from classic Philadelphia soul, driving country rhythms colliding with Scott’s ingenious lyricism and signature contemporary stylings. The story of this album began in 2013 after Scott announced this and one other album she had in the works and were planned to be released fairly close to each other. The album, just as everything else the artist touches turned to gold instantly, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 Albums Charts with 58,000 album sales on record sold in it’s first week alone. ‘Wild Cookie’ serves as her demand to listeners to sit down shut up and listen to the album, a you’re sure not to regret if you take it on board. Fifteen tracks follow, and each with their ability to command your attention and serve as smash hit singles in their own right. If we had to say which tracks you simply could not go without listening to, we would recommend ‘Coming To You’; a high energy, brassy and bold work that see’s Scott stretch and bend to the absolute tops of her vocal range with ease, ‘Run Run Run’; complete with a robust choral section supporting the legendary vocalist and dragging audiences in to join in the party, ‘Fool’s Gold’; a classically laid back fat soul track tempered with a strong hip-hop beat and Scott’s echoing BV’s filling the breathy spaces she sparsely leave between lines.
