Album of the Week – ‘Nothing Personal’ by The Sydney Jazz Orchestra

‘Nothing Personal’ by the Sydney Jazz Orchestra is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

This debut and highly anticipated release is a testament to the many years the group have been performing in and around Australia, as well as across the globe, wowing audiences and fine-tuning their craft. The seventeen person strong group brings Bandleader and fellow musician Tim Oram‘s writings to life in celebration the age old tradition of the ‘Big Band’ genre. The album encapsulates all that they have spent countless hours performing and touring to perfect; a sensitivity towards balancing multiple genres such as Jazz, Funk, Swing and Groove, colliding with the contemporary stylings of Rock and Pop, with an added dash of Classical to really test each other’s skills and prove to audiences just how professional they are. The title track sounds as if it’s been ripped from a classic 50’s Gangster film meets Mad Men with a fast paced piano solo, meandering trumpet feature and a bold brass section to match. ‘They’re Asleep Now‘, pulls back slightly on intensity, sharing with audiences a softer and more subdued side to them, further demonstrating their showmanship and talent for the many variations of the Jazz genre. The wait, although long for audiences that have followed this group’s career’s from day one has been long, but this release surely does make up for the lost time. Alongside bandleader and musician Tim Oram includes Loretta Palmeiro, Craig Walters, Andrew Robertson, Phil Harper, Simon Sweeney, Tim Crow, Craig Mitten, Rob Campbell, David Henry, Mark Barnsley, Nigel Crocker, Colin Burrows, Lee Webb, Michael Azzopardi, David Stratton and Nic Cecire.

Tim Orman discusses the compositional process –

“I enjoy the process of writing a chart so that it’s eternal” Tim says.
“If it’s good, people will still want to play it”

“I’m happy to write what people want to hear and I write arrangements that retain the quality and integrity of the original piece”.
