Jazz Made In Australia – 21st September 2015 – ‘Paul Cutlan, Across the Top’

*****NEW TIME MON 3PM-4PM******

Although Paul Cutlan’s initial instrument was clarinet he has now expanded that to all the reed instruments. He graduated from the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in 1987 with honours in Composition and started playing in Classical orchestras. Paul soon discovered his love for Jazz and particularly improvising. He is known for his diversity and has been, or still is, a member of big bands such as 10 Part Invention and Wanderlust, smaller ensembles such as Clarion Fracture Zone and James Morrison’s Quintet down to a duo he formed with fellow saxophonist Andrew Robson. He’s had his fair share of working with visiting international as well.

Paul says his main interest these days is being involved in original music projects of creative musicians, some of which, I might say, have been his own. His Coltrane project, for example, was a resounding success and has been recorded three times by the ABC, he composed and performed in the acclaimed production ‘Birth of the Cool’ for the Sydney Festival in 2003.

Paul joined the World/Jazz group MARA! in 1997 which has taken him around Europe five times, touring in to North America and throughout Asia.

Paul has finally recorded under his own name, for the first time and the resulting debut CD is called ‘Across the Top’ it is this recording playing bass clarinet or soprano saxophone, Brett Hirst playing acoustic bass and four string players who call themselves ‘The Noise’, he says much of it was a desire to bring together his love of many styles and influences.

The program begins with a stand-alone piece, but later in the program there will be more about the inspiration behind the recording and something from the suit that develops the CD’s title ‘Across the Top’. The program’s opening track is ‘Perhaps Next Time’.
