Community Billboard 21st to the 27th of September

If you are an Eastside FM listener it is quite possible that you already have your schedule made out for this event but just a little reminder that returning for the 38th year is "Manly Jazz".

The festival continues to reinvent and attract tens of thousands of visitors to Manly each year to enjoy fine tunes from renowned musicians, and to soak up the relaxed sunny seaside vibe. Over the past few years Manly Jazz has, under new direction, expanded and grown. From the traditional three days of outdoor stages the festival has more than tripled to become an 11-day celebration of live music.

Maybe jazz isn't your first choice when it comes to music however not to worry as there will plenty of other genres throughout the festival including blues, roots and rock. The performances will be all over Manly from small local venues to the Corso and Manly’s beachfront.

Some of the artists playing at the festival are ARIA award winner "The Idea of North", "Charito", "The Australian Army Band" and if you were lucky enough to come along to our "Radiothon Launch Night" back in June you would have seen the great performance by Darren Percival he will also be playing in Manly if you wanted to relive that great night, plus many more artists from around Australia.

When: September 25th to October 5th.

Springtime is well and truly glittering around us with hotter days appearing and colder days disappearing, of course one of the most enjoyable activities to get up to on a lovely day is to pop along to a festival and even better if it is for all the family and free.

This years Surry Hills festival returns this weekend, one of Sydney most exciting inner city 'burb is holding a day full of entertainment. This year’s theme will be ‘Stories, Love & Tales’ a day of live music stages, hands-on activities, and interactive arts installations that tell the stories of the area.
There will be music from a mix of contemporary artists, many of whom have lived and worked in the area and also artists from all around Australia.

Apart from the great live music on offer there is also lots more going on such as "Surry Sock Puppets performance", "Picnic Blanket Story Project", documentary screenings and there will also be a fancy dress dog show in the mix as well, so there will be lots to get up to that will keep everyone entertained.
All funds raised on the day go towards programs run by the Surry Hills neighbourhood centre.

For those of you who are looking for an adventurous activity this weekend that certainly wont be something you get up to on a typical Saturday then pop along to the "Sydney Scavenger Hunt".

The urban styled orienteering event will be a great way to get out and see parts of the city you have not seen before while also meeting new people and having an active healthy day. The scavenger hunt is done in teams of 3-4, the idea is to follow your instructions (received on the day at registration) your instructions will be a list of things to find, challenges to do, places to go, and various ways of proving that you have completed the tasks.

A different way of spending the day in the city as you will be doing fun challenges for 2 hours trying to find as many of the items on the instructions sheet as possible. At the end of the hunt the winners will be announced, for the team that completes the most clues.

And not to worry if you need a team you will be matched up with one, so solos and doubles are also welcome to take part in this traditional but unusual entertaining day out.

There are lots of great events happening in our lovely Centennial Park that we have wrote about previously on community billboard, however one that is sure to be one of the many highlights taking place in the park this year is on this Sunday as "Writers in the Park" will be holding their inaugural festival.

We here at Eastside Radio have great appreciation for "Writers in the Park" who is run by volunteers just like your station 89.7FM is run, their volunteers includes writers, storytellers, publishers, arts associations, performers, illustrators, poets, and literacy advocates.

Writers in the Park festival is a whole day of celebrations, all the artists in collaboration with "Centennial Parklands Foundation", "Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators SCBWI", and the historic "Residences of Centennial Park" are joining together to celebrate the creative life in Centennial Park.

A literacy day for everyone in Sydney’s beautiful park to celebrate books and ideas, a chance to talk cyber-bullying, ethics and memoirs be entertained by cartoonists and illustrators, plus kids can meet much-loved authors and illustrators who will tell stories and give tips on how to write and draw.
Your perfect day out to learn more and browse through the wide selection of book stalls that will be on offer in lovely relaxing surroundings.

If you are not sure what your next gig is going to be and are looking for a night of great live entertainment with a mixture of sounds then next week "Money Killed Jonny" will be performing with guest support by "Big Erle".

It will be a cool, smooth, eclectic, and original performance as "Money Killed Jonny" bring their soul inspired, world beats jazz and blues style to the stage. They will be sure to have a mix of witticisms, rants, and social, political and romantic observations, all through the sounds of free form jazz, soul, blues, and world jams that have been crafted into songs. You might recognise their sound from their second CD which was released in 2013 named "Cool Hand" that has been played here on Eastside Radio.

The six piece group made up of Steven Robinson, Ed Lee, Noah Hampson, Lenore Lovegrove, Andrew Rankin, and Matt Bourne was first originated back in the early 90's however it truly became the group that it is today in the new millennium. They have been described as “The best kept secret in Sydney” and been known to bring you an experience of “Miles Davis meets Midnight Oil” so they are sure to keep you moving and grooving the night away.

Big Erle will be the supporting guest at this weeknight gig, bringing their show of blues, folk and roots as they have that swamp blues swing style they will play songs like “Sun Don’t Shine on Me” and “Solid Ground” to some they might bring a close comparison to the "Black Keys".

If you would like to see reimagined designs of Sydney's layout there will be an event on to bring you just that and lots more interesting interactive artworks as "Bespoke City" will be taking place.

At the arts event it will be your chance to witness how a new generation of designers, makers, technologists, innovators and artists reimagine Sydney’s streets. This outdoor art festival will be an enchanting series of bespoke installations, projections and interactive artworks. Collectively they turn the spotlight on the bicycle as a humble but brilliant piece of technology, and share a vision of the city as open to being hacked, remapped and remade.

There will be features such as a pedal powered light mural, autonomous painting machine, electronic bicycle orchestra, microbiology in the urban wild, and an interesting giant data visualisation display. A day out for all the family to learn and discover what Sydney could look like and checking out all the cool pedal pushed technology.

Darling Harbour is always a place that is buzzing with exciting entertainment and next week a festival full of culture, music and entertainment is lighting up the harbour as "Fiesta" returns for 11 days.

Ignite your passion and feed your soul with Latin music, dance, food and culture as "Fiesta" brings Sydney the best in live Latin entertainment with the Sydney Latin American film festival highlights, where you will enjoy live music and free open-air film screenings under the stars.
There will be lots of talent throughout the festival such as international acts, and local talent. A chance to sink into some soul, jazz and more in Darling Quarter or check out colourful contemporary and traditional folkloric dance at the Harbourside Amphitheatre.

If you want to take part in all the action and get some Latin dance experience there will be instructors from some of the city’s best dance schools, to take you to the limelight as they lead the crowd in Latin dance routines throughout the day. To fully experience the culture after you have built up an appetite after all your dancing there will be several food tastings from all over Latin America on offer and a huge selection of Fiesta-inspired drinks and dining offers at restaurants, cafes and bars around the bay.
