‘Sand Lines’ (Earshift Music) by The Jeremy Rose Quartet is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

The long awaited release see’s Rose showcase both his composition and instrumental talents alongside some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians. The artist’s enduring careers together has meant that they have gained an intimate insight into each others approaches to their craft. Rose embraces the opportunity to showcases his his fellow bandmasters talents but providing the foundations for a cohesive body of work, his compositions. Each work however is laced with a heighten sensitivity to towards encouraging the brilliance of his team’s abilities to create. They do so by offering melodic phrases, fragments and patterns that simply serve as ideas, motifs and platforms that lay exposed on the page, flexible and ripe for interpretation. The artists indulged themselves throughout creative process taking two years to reach completion. This time included fleshing out compositions in front of audiences around Sydney with a milestone ‘work-in-progress’ show at a pop-up venue in The Rocks in 2012, wetting the public’s appetite and leaving the wanting more. The quartet led by Rose includes Jackson Harrison on Piano, Alex Boneham on Double Bass, James Waples on Drums and Precussion and a special guest appearance on two tracks from Carl Morgan on Guitar. The group celebrated the project’s completion with a highly successful launch at Sydney’s Venue 505, sure to be one of many ahead of them with such a strong body of work to showcase.

Jeremy Rose on ‘Sand Lines’:

“The music undertakes a journey with improvised sections that spring from the notated material…I was exploring longer form compositions for this ensemble, creating numerous platforms for improvisation within the one work, often blurring the line between improvisation and composition….I’ve been working with most of these musicians off and on over the past 10 years. There’s a chemistry that we hope is captured on the album. The development period allowed more time to hone the compositions to get the most out of the players – this is a rare luxury and I’m grateful for the musicians that worked on the music. I really love everyone’s playing in the band and wanted to make their improvisatory contributions significant to the overall album,”
