Album of the Week – ‘Made in New York’ by Project Grand Slam

‘Made in New York’ (Cakewalks Records) by Project Grand Slam is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

This jazz fusion extravaganza from the group is filled with original tracks by bassist and composer Robert Mill recorded in studio plus some very special live recordings at New York’s prestigious Blue Note. What makes this more than just another jazz album is it’s core focus on maintaining energy and vitality without compromising subtlety or depth. To begin with, the group who predominately perform as instrumentalists bring in the raspy Joan Jett meets Etta James talents of Kat Robichaud on ‘New York Groove’ and whilst covering the legendary Jimi Hendrix‘s ‘Fire’. Their comfort zone within the instrumental tracks don’t however disappoint either with a number of  original tracks hand written by Mill showing off his writing capabilities whist also giving his fellow musicians the space to breath and add their own creative flair to the mix. Finally there is the third challenge of two one take wonders with ‘Because She Said So’ and ‘Cakewalk for Debra’ both recorded at NY’s Blue Note. The album also features Nathan Cepelinski on saxaphone, Marcello Casagrandi on piano, Jeffrey Fajardo on drums, and Ben Sher on guitar.
