Esperanza Spalding for Vivid Live
Esperanza Spalding performing Emily’s D+Evolution at Vivid LIVE
On the 4th of June, Sydney hosts the 4 time Grammy award winning singer/composer/bassist Esperanza Spalding during Vivid LIVE for her ground breaking new project Emily’s D+Evolution – an album described as “otherworldly.. cosmic soul.. kinetic songs that burst with energy and life..”.
Esperanza Spalding makes her debut performance in Australia this year. She is a jazz protégé, flexible in blending Brazilian melodies, Afro-Caribbean grooves, post-bop harmonies. She sings in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Citing Ron Carter, Dave Holland, Joe Lovano and Wayne Shorter as primary inspirations she known for honouring tradition while remaining true to her own voice.
Esperanza playfully experiments with her alter ego “Emily” (also her middle name) as an inner guide for her new project. Her album offers vibrant colours that she can express as Emily through the sinewy riffs doubled on electric bass and distorted guitar with melodies that stick and float across registers. She has assembled a new band for Emily’s D+Evolution including guitarist Matthew Stevens (Christian Scott) and drummer Karriem Riggins (Madlib, Erykah Badu).
Spalding says “my hope for this group is to create a world around each song… we will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video, and the movement of our bodies.”
Spalding told NPR “Whether you want to see it as devolution and evolution, and the place where they co-exist without one diminishing the other, or you could look at it like barely having the tools that you need, but having to move forward, and having to keep moving”.
Esperanza Spalding has performed everywhere from the Oscars to the White House. She will be at the Sydney Opera House on the 4th June 2016 to invite the audience into the world of Emily’s D+Evolution, asking the audience to consider “What do you when you don’t really have all the tools that you need, but you have to survive? And you need to grow and expand?” (NPR).
