Counting (and accounting for) Women in the Visual Arts – The CoUNTess Report
Arts Monday’s Jane Raffan delves into women’s representation in the Australian visual arts sector in her interviews with Elvis Richardson, artist and author of The Countess Report, “a benchmarking project and online resource on gender equality in the Australian contemporary art sector”.
The interviews are set within a playlist of fabulous music showcasing female vocalists calling for respect, empowerment and action.
And the findings? The number of women entering the arts sector is far greater than men, but their proportional successes – achieving status as directors, prize-winners, and representation in galleries, to name a few of the areas in focus – are significantly fewer. Jane and Elvis discuss the report’s findings and ponder a deeper understanding of underlying biases as a starting point for action.
