Featuring an amazing line-up of traditional and contemporary Latin influences in music, dance and film, these much loved sessions embrace SLAFF’s belief that cinema is an immersive cultural experience for all.
Opening Film – I AM NOT LORENA
Feature | Chile 2015 | Isidora Marras | 82 min | Spanish with English subtitles
Olivia is an actress in her late twenties living in Santiago. She has recently broken up with her boyfriend, but still appears in a play he’s directing, while simultaneously spending time with her mother whose dementia gets worse by the day. To make things worse she keeps getting phone calls asking for a woman called Lorena, who apparently is greatly in debt. Olivia’s attempts to convince the creditors that she’s not Lorena fail, and she decides to embark on a journey to find out who the woman is.
Based on the real life experiences of director Marras, who for almost two years received calls trying to collect another woman’s debts, the film follows an actress who regularly acts as others, but who finds it difficult when another person acts as herself. Olivia’s identity is eventually put to question, by her surroundings as well as by herself, as this Kafka-esque tale of the horrors of bureaucracy, which has been updated to our era of digital technology, takes Olivia through Santiago’s murky streets and its even murkier offices
Music – From the haunting sounds of the Andes to the rich rhythms and melodies of Chile, Mexico and Cuba, renowned Chilean musician and producer Pato Lara returns to Sydney a unique and unearthed rediscovery of some of Latin American’s lesser known soundscapes with a popular, contemporary twist. Food – To complement our session of cinema and live rhythms, cine loungers will also be treated to some flavoursome Chilean bites and empanadas.

ABOUT SLAFF
Started in 2006, the Sydney Latin American Film Festival (SLAFF) is about to host its 11th annual event, 8-12 September 2016.
SLAFF is a non-profit organisation. Proceeds from the Festival are donated to community development, social justice and environmental projects in Latin America and Australia. Over the past 11 years, our Community Support Program has raised more than $116,000. This is made possible through numerous volunteers, supporters, collaborators and sponsors – who share our passion for promoting Latin American cinema and culture.
Even in a multicultural city like Sydney, stereotypes abound about being a Latino or a Latina. Through our
deeply considered selection of feature films, documentaries and shorts – the festival takes on the responsibility for presenting the diverse stories, cultures and voices coming from the vast Latin American region.
