MARGARET OLLEY

This Arts Thursday, celebrate the life and contribution of the beloved Australian artist Margaret Olley.

Margaret Olley: Painter, Peer, Mentor and Muse on exhibition at the SH Ervin Gallery tells of Olley’s life not only as an accomplished artist herself but also as a friend and supporter of many of her own contemporaries and a younger generation of painters such as Nicholas Harding, Robert Barnes, Cressida Campbell, Criss Canning and Ben Quilty.

Her championing of her own mentors, such as Jean Bellette ensured that their work was not forgotten and her own distinctive persona inspired some remarkable portraits, including the award-winning Archibald portraits by William Dobell and Ben Quilty.

Jane Watters the Director of the SH Ervin Gallery speaks to Maisy Stapleton about the exhibition and her own memories of the artist .

kitchen-2In addition, there will be a part-reprise of an interview with Christine France, one of Margaret Olley’s close friends, her executor and a member of the Margaret Olley Art Trust, who gave Maisy Stapleton a tour of the artist’s extraordinary house in early 2012 – and simultaneously, revealed Olley’s remarkable character – before the house’s contents were packed up to be reinstalled at the Tweed Regional Gallery at Murwillumbah.

Tune into Arts Thursday to share the conversations and insights into a remarkable life, lived joyously and with gusto, for art.
