The night alive
The Irish are so adept at knocking out great plays that Australia’s main stages can’t hope to keep up. Luckily, there’s the likes of O’Punksky’s Theatre, the company started by Maeliosa Stafford, Patrick Dickson and John O’Hare, to pick up pots of gold left by the wayside, such as Conor McPherson’s 2013 award winner The Night Alive, getting its Australian premiere at the Old FItz. Dreams and disaster unfold in a grimy Dublin bedsit. The scene is the abode of Tommy and all four characters have taken hard knocks and want different things from the others. This is a must see tear jerker.
Michael Mansell: An Australian Treaty
What would a treaty or treaties with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples contain? Where would a treaty sit with the Constitution? What effect would it have on non-Aboriginal Australia?
Michael Mansell, Aboriginal lawyer and activist, will outline his thoughts on a national treaty with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Soul Messengers
Soul revivalists, Soul Messengers, are back in 2017 with a new album. Both of their studio albums, 2013’s ‘I’m Alive’, and 2015’s ‘Dirty Soul’ garnered great reviews and nationwide radio play, with ‘Dirty Soul’ reaching #12 on the Australian Blues and Roots chart and featuring as Sydney Jazz and Blues radio station Eastside Radio’s album of the week.
Previously known as Chich and The Soul Messengers, the Sydney based bluesy-soul revivalists present a dynamite live show honed at regular gigs in Sydney and surrounds, the band having played over 85 shows since 2014 at venues such as Marrickville’s Lazybones, Newtown’s Leadbelly and Sydney’s The Basement. In addition to performing regular shows Soul Messengers have been added to NSW festivals Double Bay Street Festival and The Northern Beaches Music Festival in multiple years. Add in past residencies at Enmore’s Vic on the Park, Marrickville’s Gasoline Pony and Newtown’s Botany View Hotel and you have one of Sydney’s most booked originals bands.
