frank Cbing CROONER is an American epithet given to male singers of jazz standards, mostly from the   Great American Songbook, either backed by a full orchestra,a big band or by a piano. Some  performers did not accept the term.

In an interview Frank Sinatra (pictured left) said that he did not consider himself or Bing Crosby  (pictured right) “crooners”.

Forgetting the definition just for a minute, this style of singing gave us the likes of the two greats pictured and “crooners” such as those  featured in this weeks show – Matt Monro, Val Doonican, Andy Williams, Nat “King” Cole, Bobby Darin, Buddy Greco,Vic Damone, Perry Como, Danny Kaye, Johnny Hartman,Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jnr and  and Jerry Vale .These IDOLS paved the way for “today’s crooner idols ” such as Michael Buble, Chet Baker, Boz Scaggs,Harry Connick Jnr.,Art Garfunkel, and Barry Manilow.

In addition to these easy, wonderful voices, the songs and arrangements that they chose and continue to choose have provided an enormous catalogue of music for all time.

The list of artistes in this programme is just a PRIMER in CROONERS. There is a very long list of  male singers who have and will continue to make music in this manner for all our listening pleasure.

I can feel a few more future programmes of this genre coming into my head.

ENJOY – the full list of singers, songs and albums from this program is available by clicking on the program guide and “A Taste Of Honey” and just following the prompts.
