A Taste Of Honey June 12 2014
SONGSTRESSES V CROONERS….RESULT EQUAL SCORES…From Lena Horne(feature pic.) to Dame Shirley Bassey (pic.left) and segue to Chet Baker (pic.right) there are stories of longevity, brevity, multiple marriages, tragic deaths, suspicious deaths, peer awards from industry to presidential, US chart success, UK chart success, global chart successes, physical Millions of records when GOLD and PLATINUM STATUS were based on real pieces of music carrying material, chequered careers, charmed careers, downs, ups and resurgences.Through all the dynamics of life in the spotlight, the constant is TALENT– unparalleled talent for performance, interpretation, writing, collaborating, producing, arranging and in many cases combinations of all these qualities.
To be able to write a line such as ‘Oh,you’re in my blood like holy wine’ which Joni Mitchell stunned us with and have it interpretted by k.d.lang is unique, OR ‘her gaze swept over me now,a slow hot wind’ as written Henry Mancini & Norman Gimbel BUT without the interpretation by Johnny Hartman making you feel that the hot wind is really blowing, the song may not have survived. For traditional folk songs to have the talent of Odetta (Holmes) reimagine the words and music, for one of Don McLean’s hits to be reworked by Harry Belafonte, for the great songwriting partnerships of Rogers & Hart, Harold Arlen & Ted Koehler, Lerner & Loewe, Pomus & Shuman to have their art come alive through Dinah Washington, Buddy Greco, Harry Connick Jnr.,one can only be in awe of the inspiration that has gone into the work of all these supremely talented artistes and spare a moment of thanks for the the legacy that we are able to enjoy over and over again.
