A Taste Of Honey March 12 2015

johnniepattijimmieconnietab Great looking   people and great “POP ” songs, the lyrics and      melodies of which are synonymous with my musical knowledge.Indeed my formative years in loving recorded music. WHY? Simply because the songs they sang were easy to remember – verse, chorus and rhythm and anyone and everyone could whistle and hum the melody-the true DNA of a POP song. My ‘ birthday program ‘ choices for this year are drawn from my earliest memories of songs and artistes from the late 50’s ‘HIT PARADE’ – i listened to radio at any opportunity growing up and when ewe went on family drives in the company Morris Minor we all sang the songs of the day ….In the late 50’s making the charts (pictured from left to right) are – Johnny Mathis, Patti Page, Jimmie Rodgers, Connie Francis and Tab Hunter. In addition naming a few more superstars of the day there was Pat Boone, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Debbie Reynolds, Rosemary Clooney, Sam Cooke,The Four Aces, The Diamonds, The Crew Cuts, Richie Valens, Frankie Avalon, The Kingston Trio and so many more chart toppers……they  fuelled my thirst for pop music as I am sure they did yours.

Syrupy love songs, suggestive swinging lyrics, simple folk songs revved up, doowop, latin infused instrumentals, smooth vocal groups and more – lyrics that could be understood and easily remembered all resulted in this vast array of music that started the soundtrack of my life. I know that it probably features in yours……These songs made radio and radio made these songs – These songs and these artistes are a very important part of the legacy that is popular music and it is a pity that for the most part they are not heard as part of music based radio today …….after all Baby Boomers are 30 % of Australia’s population.

Today’s show merely scratches the surface of the rise of pop music in the late 50’s BUT it does make you want to sing, hum, whistle, smile and reminisce and think what a great time we had listening, dreaming and shimmying (or whatever took your fancy) to these featured tracks.

There are many more where these came from!
