A genuine musical and entrepreneurial superstar turns 80 on March 31st. Herb Alpert is a musician known mostly for his association with the group known as The Tijuana Brass. In addition in 1962, he formed with his partner Jerry Moss, what was to become the world’s largest independent record company A & M Records, recording artistes that included The Carpenters,The Sandpipers,The Captain & Tennille, Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66( his second wife Lani Hall pictured with Herb here – was the lead singer with Sergio Mendes), Christ Montez and so many more.
His musical accomplishments include 5 No 1 albums, 28 albums on the Billboard album chart, 9 Grammy Awards,14 Platinum albums and 15 Gold albums.
His global sales are in excess of 72 million copies and he is the only recording artist to hit No 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 pop chart as both a vocalist “This Guy’s In Love With You” in 1968 and as an instrumentalist with “Rise” in 1979.
Its a great story for this boy raised in East Los Angeles who became enamoured with the Mariachi sound on an early visit to a bullfight in Tijuana. He popularised this sound in the single “The Lonely Bull”, funded the production himself and because of the growing demand for performances formed the band known as The Tijuana Brass BUT they were not Mexican – he refers to the group as being Part Italian – four lasagnas,part Jewish – two bagels and part American – an american cheese and the rest is history.
90 minutes can in no way represent his career but it does give me the opportunity to celebrate with you some great original music, some amazing interpretations of other songwriters and also a few of the artistes he personally produced for the world stage.
