A Taste Of Honey September 18 2014
Whenever artistes that are of my generation pass away,my sense of mortality just goes up a few notches – and last week was no exception with Joe Sample( pic. far left and with Randy Crawford) and Bob Crewe (pic.centre plus The Four Seasons) both leaving us mortals to join their colleagues already in the big ‘ entertainment centre ‘ in the sky, that feeling hit me again. It would seem that this is happening more regularly these days and perhaps it’s got something to do with the fact that I am getting a little older too !! These two artistes who composed, produced, recorded and performed for a period of 50+ years, albeit in different genres of music, have left us with a legacy of work that will forever provide more hours of listening than any of us have time to devote to that most pleasant of pastimes. Whether it is reminiscing over 60’s pop instrumentals of The Bob Crewe Generation (his own group), his production values with Andy Williams or Oliver or marvelling at his writing talent along with Bob Gaudio (and the production of ) the major hits – some 20 #10 hits for Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, one cannot help but to smile and reminisce. So too with Joe Sample – who can forget the first time they heard ‘Street Life’ with Randy Crawford and the rest of The Crusaders, or his beautiful instrumental album ‘Carmel’, his work with Steely Dan on ‘Aja’ or his piano work with artists such as Marvin Gaye, Joni Mitchell, Minnie Ripperton, and Anita Baker. I am saddened but I’m happy at the same time because this music of my life brings back so many happy memories of times that seem a world away from today. RIP Joe and Bob.
