Album of the Week – ‘A Life in a Day’ by David Ades
‘A Life in a Day’ (Lionsharecords) by David Ades is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.
The album was recorded in New York, only weeks before the artists passing surrounded by friends and showcasing the legendary saxophonists talents. Over the course of his career, the artist has spent his time sharing his passion for the art of making music throughout various collaborations at home and abroad with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Dr John, Paul Grabowsky, Dale Barlow, Vine Jones, The Cat Empire and The Australian Youth Orchestra (seen below). From a young age he understood the importance of surrounding yourself with and learning from your fellow musicians after taking himself at nineteen to New York to soak in the legendary musicianship of artists like Freddie Hubbard, Jack McDuff and Sonny Stitt. Soon after his return he was swiftly taken under the wing of composer Phil Treloar who become one of the most influential musicians of Ades’ career, teaching him the invaluable ability to embrace risk amongst trusted fellow musicians in search of a deeply seeded authenticity in the creative process. He was then inducted as a member of ‘Feeling To Though’ (featuring Treloar on drums, Mark Simmonds on tenor saxophone and Steve Elphic on bass) where we continued to collaborate with artists and ensembles like the Tasmania University String Orchestra, Christian Wojtowicz, Pipeline Contemporary Music Project and Simone DeHaan.
Following a 90s stint in Asia and releasing his debut album ‘Bird on a Head’, Ades released a further two albums, ‘FATS’ and ‘Juicy Shots’ with newly formed band FATS a.k.a Scott Tinkler, Greg Sheehan and Thierry Fosmalle in Byron Bay. His career continued to skyrocket performing in 2000 with Treloar once again at the Sydney Opera House and Wangaratta International Jazz Festival (for the second time), of which he was then invited to perform with New York bassist and composer Mark Helias and fellow trio ‘Open Loose’. This performance led to a further friendship and yearly visit to New York to play with Helias and tenor saxophonist Tony Malaby, leading him to record his second album ‘A Glorious Uncertainty’ with the artists and drummer Gerald Cleaver in 2011. Giving back to the art form was always a key component throughout his career, teaching at various times throughout it and working with the likes of the Australian Youth Orchestra on improvisation programs and workshops.
