Album of the Week – “Brunswick St Station’ By Dan Quigley

‘Brunswick St Station’ by Dan Quigley is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

Taking in influences from Woody Shaw to Freddie Hubbard and more, Brunswick St Station is a masterful infusion of the best in classic and contemporary jazz. The Brisbane based trumpeter found his place within the jazz genre during his early 20’s, following a rich childhood exposed to the greats. Years of practice and refining his talents have led him to his distinguished position as the Head of the School at Jazz Music Institute in Brisbane, giving his career fluidity between performing, educator and activist. Quigley has even gone so far as to pave the way for young and aspiring Australian jazz musicians to connect with the most renowned jazz organisation’s, Jazz at Lincoln Centre, New York, having successfully   launched the ‘Essentially Ellington’ collaborative program working alongside artistic director Wynton Marsalis. The album features Andrew Dickeson on drums, Brendan Clarke on bass, John Harkins on piano, Col Loughnan on tenor sax and Bob Bertles on alto saxaphone.

“This is one of the first jazz curriculums that addresses the entire fundamental range of jazz styles; from New Orleans to Bebop to Modern, it’s all there. Dan Quigley has developed a template that should be followed by schools who are serious about the study and performance of jazz music.” – Wynton Marsalis

“I enjoy playing all styles jazz, I try to present as much of the history as I can at each of my gigs as there is so many great songs out there to play. When I play I strive to be myself, if I do that I’m at least doing something original and honoring the tradition in the present.” – Dan Quigley

“What is interesting is that people don’t need a definition of what classical music is or rock music. In fact, what does it even mean to ask to someone if they like rock or popular music? Jazz needs to be accepted for what it is or what it is about instead of needing to be defined and confined.” – Dan Quigley
