Album of the Week – ‘Choose Your Weapon’ by Hiatus Kaiyote

‘Choose Your Weapon’ by Hiatus Kaiyote is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

The Grammy nominated quartet take 2015 by storm with their stellar 18 track sophomore release. The album is truly a labour of love infused with their signature futuristic and soulful melodic stylings. This highly anticipated second release following their debut in 2013 entitled ‘Tawk Tomahawk’, is nothing short of a cinematic soundscape providing the perfect 70 minute escape from the mundane. The group burst through the boundaries of their first release, designing a harmonious, fluid and unified body of work from multiple genre’s including soul, blues, jazz, funk, and alternative. Their true ingenious lies in their ability to rip these genre’s out of the decades they, at their height became most notorious, and present them in a contemporary framework.

They allow listeners past, present (and surely in future) to connect, relate to and be inspired by something that they are somewhat familiar with yet have never heard the Hiatus Kiayote way. They continue to prove time and time again that this unique style of music has a place in pop culture, made clear by their illustrious success (of which are sure to continue), yet without the trappings of the mainstream like form, hooks or duration to name a few. The Melbourne outfit – Perrin Moss, Paul Bender, Simon Mavin and Nai Palm – have built a sound and reputation around moulding and manipulating these key marketable elements and adding to them the music and artists that inspire them, coupled with what their fans beg to hear; something new, something different, something original, an escape. ‘Choose Your Weapon’ was born out of the hundreds of hours of hard work, time, effort and burnt rubber the group accumulated as they traveled to promote their work. The album showcases the maturity gained from working so closely, seeing the group understand and develop their own intuitive musical language and conveying this through track after track of slick, tight and intricate melodies.
