Album of the Week – ‘Cosita Divina’ By Emma Pask

Cosita Divina’ (Independent) by Emma Pask is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week. This long awaited fifth solo album see’s the artist indulge in a Latin fiesta breathing new life into her outstanding and signature jazz vocal stylings.  The release is the perfect soundtrack for summer, literally mimicking the vibrant sounds of a festivals fresh from the streets of Brazil as an introduction to the album complete with lively drumming, clapping and cheering panning form ear to ear. Pask had always toyed with the Latin sound throughout her career, recoding long time performed tracks ‘Crickets Sing for Anamaria‘, as well as standard ‘Mas Que Nada‘, but decided to take the plunge after a world wind romance turned into a life parter and also a visit to the beautiful country cementing her love for the genre.

The body of work see’s Pask also offer some new original compositions to the audience such as the album’s title track, showcasing yet another interpretation by the artist of the genre paired with her purebred jazz upbringing. After quite some time between albums, she made the most of her time in studio, not only recording a revitalised version of her talents but also filling the studio with long time friends including Dale Barlow, Kevin Hunt, Phil Stack, Carl Dewhurst, Matt Keegan, Tim Firth, Jonathan Zwartz, Sandro Bueno, Dane Laboyrie, James Greening, Dale Carthew, Dan Barnett, Marcello Maio. This intimate relationship with both the style and musicians shines throughout the recording inviting listeners to join in with the festivities filed with friends and family. One particularly breathtaking track is Pask’s duet with bassist Phil Stack for the standard ‘Afro Blue’. After an extended session in studio, and the sun had set, leaving these two talents along with the album’s producer exhausted but inspired to push on through the night, the sol recording of this track came to be. It’s raw, vulnerable, haunting and will stay with you for many years to come. Clear out some room in your collections for an independent release that is truly not to be missed.
