‘Kapture’ by Sandy Evans, Bobby Singh, Brett Hirst and Toby Hall is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

Rufus Records celebrate’s its 100th release since it’s inception with ‘Kapture’ featuring an ingenious mix of Australia’s finest jazz and Indian performers. The core outfit is comprised of Sandy Evans (saxophones), Bobby Singh (tabla), Brett Hirst (bass) and Toby Hall (drums and percussion). The third ingredient added to this soundscape of ethno-jazz is the artist’s passion towards paying tribute to South African freedom fighter Ahmed Kathrada, cell mate to fellow activist Nelson Mandela. If the influences on this album already mentioned were not enough, the quartet added renounced choreographer/ dancer Liz Lea to the mix, specialist in contemporary and classical Indian dance and martial arts. The final instalment to project saw the addition of Sarangan Sriranganathan as a guest vocalist. The album brings to fruition Evans’ history and love of fusing togehter the improvisational techniques exhibited amongst the jazz and Indian musical traditions. The emotive and extreme experiences of Kathrada’s time in prison, documented in his many personal journal entries, proved to become a pivotal force driving the creative development of the work, with Lea adding the unique fourth dimension of interpretation and improvisation through movement.
