ALBUM OF THE WEEK – ‘Ol’ Glory’ By JJ Grey and Mofro

JJ Grey, Andrew Trube (guitar), Anthony Farrell (piano/organ), Anthoney Cole (drums/pecusion), Dennis Marion (trumpet), Jeff Dazey (saxophone) and Todd Smallie (bass) form the six piece blues outfit known as ‘JJ Grey & Mofro’. Grey is celebrating his seventh release with the group entitled ‘Ol’ Glory’ showcasing their trademark fusion of the blues, southern rock, funk, folk and soul. Grey took the opportunity with this album to slow the process down and reconnect with the group after spending the majority of his career back to back touring. recording and producing albums.

The record’s concept was to serve as an eternal live performance of some of JJ Grey and Mofro’s best work to date. This intention drove the creative side of the work, which has proven time and time again to connect deeply with audiences around the world. Grey and Mofro accompanied this stylistic direction with a lyrical decision to reflect on their careers and achievements, too. Grey spoke about the kernel of the album being formed during a trip to Jamaica.

“I had an epiphany,” JJ Grey says, “I was eating my favorite breakfast—ackee and salt fish—and was real warm but the sea breeze had just started out of the east. There was music playing somewhere in the distance and all at once I realized that I was the luckiest person alive (no matter how many times I might have tried to convince myself otherwise). Then I started humming this tune.”

Tracks to look out for include the anthem ‘Everything Is A Song’ and ‘Every Minute’. Both tracks remind us to take a moment to enjoy the important things in our lives and realise just how lucky we are to have the people, careers and experiences we may have become too complacent to realise. ‘Home in the Sky’ is a particularly personal track in which Grey takes listeners on a journey back to his home town of Florida to show off his family home and it’s surroundings which served as the birthplace of his musical career.

Eastside Radio is proud to announce that our very own Wednesday Drive presenter Eric Gyros will be interviewing JJ Grey on the 1st April. Make sure to tune in from 4PM-6PM at 89.7FM or stream the content right here at www.eastsidefm.org
