Album of the Week – ‘Provenance’ by Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky

‘Provenance’ (ABC Jazz) by Vince Jones and Paul Grabowsky is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

The album’s grounded throughout the conceptual process in may ways, most notably that the material was to take a retrospective look at the pair’s intertwined careers. This included initial encounters, as well as their influences and experiences gathered over time showcased through a mix of originals written by the pair, others by Jones for various projects and finally a few standards re-imagined. The album ties together through their minimalistic instrumentation approach, keeping each song fairly consistently only vocals and piano with a hint of flumpet (flugelhorn and trumpet) thrown in to show off some of Jones other talents. Both artists continue to grow and enjoy successes since their meeting. Jones has experienced this through audience adoration turning the musician into a platinum selling artist and selling out venues from Sydney to London and back. Grabowsky’s career has also earned him multiple ARIA, Helpmann, and several Bell Awards. Not content with simply accumulating accolades, Grabowsky continues to help foster the next generation of Australian Jazz musicians as founder and leader for 19 years of the Australian Art Orchestra, executive at the ABC, and leading the Academy of Performing Arts at Monash University, a project which also brought the pair together in 2014.
