Album of the Week – ‘Tales, Musings and Other Reveries’ by Jeremy Pelt
‘Tales, Musings and other Reveries’ by Jeremy Pelt is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.
The release marks Pelt’s 12th studio recording and showcases some of the artists’ best work to date. His signature style founded on the ‘post-bop’ branch of Jazz forms the foundation of the work alongside the influences of the legendary writings of Davis, Coltrane, Jones and more. With a truly talented musical casting, listeners are treated to an improvisational fusion set to impress as each artist challenges the other throughout intense sessions of masterful playing, pushing each player to bend and mould to the others calling card. The intricacy of this album delves further into the instrumentation, most notably with the use of two drummers split across both the left and right channels. Alongside Pelt on Trumpet features Simona Premazzi on piano, Ben Allison on Bass, Billy Drummond on right channel drums, and Victor Lewis on left channel Drums. This divisive and disruptive element to the rhythmic component of the piece would seem to most challenging, however through Pelt’s sensitivity to this environmental shift, the audience is still left with a holistic sounding record, noticing only when there are distinctive nuances and accents laced delicately within each piece reminding us that there are two brains at work in the engine room.
