Album of the Week – ‘The Ruby Session’s via The Jazz Action Society

‘The Ruby Session’s via The Jazz Action Society is Eastside Radio’s Album of the Week.

The instrumental organisation celebrates more than 40 years supporting live music with a retrospective compilation album of sessions across two CD’s. The organisation previously held monthly live music concerts since its inception in 1974. 1994 saw the group commemorate 20 years of service at Sydney’s coveted ‘The Basement’, sponsor to the society, and took things a step further again at the Sydney Opera House Studio Theatre just five years later in honour of 25 years in existence. 2012 was another milestone year for the organisation as they partnered with Eastside Radio bringing on a broadcasting arm to the initiative which saw increased coverage and promotion of live music, further cementing their relationships with artists media and audiences, in particular through the ongoing program ‘Take One’ celebrating live music events coming up in and around Sydney.

Throughout their time organising live music events and spreading the word about Australian Jazz and Jazz in Australia, the not-for-profit gained close friendships with many musicians in the industry such as David McLeod, Col Nolan/Harry Rivers Ensemble, Don Reid’s Blue Rondo Project, Judy Bailey Quintet, Lily Dior Quintet, Trevor Griffin Sextet, Mark Isaacs Quartet, Mike Nock, Sydney Conservatorium Big Band, Ten Part Invention and Wanderlust. ‘The Ruby Sessions’ acts as a cross section of their time in service, amalgamating their 1982 release with more recent performances, all live, and all featuring some of the most outstanding talent the industry has to offer including the likes of the Errol Buddle Quartet, the Marie Wilson Band, the Alex Silver Quintet (below), Sandy White, The Ken James Band and more.
